Partial discharge (PD) is a small electrical spark within or on the surface of insulation that does not fully bridge the electrodes. Over time PD erodes insulation and is one of the earliest indicators of impending failure in medium- and high-voltage assets.

Why measure PD?

Detecting PD early lets you plan maintenance before an unplanned outage. It is widely used on cables, GIS and air-insulated switchgear, transformers and rotating machines — both as periodic spot tests and continuous monitoring.

Detection methods

  • Electrical (TEV/HFCT) — high-frequency current transformers and transient earth voltage sensors.
  • Acoustic & UHF — ultrasonic and UHF sensors, especially for GIS.
  • Online monitoring — permanently installed sensors that trend PD activity 24/7.

Spot testing vs continuous monitoring

Handheld spot testers (e.g. the Monitra range) suit routine surveys, while permanent monitoring is used on critical assets. For HV test systems and diagnostics, the b2 High Voltage range covers VLF and PD test sets.
